Asahidake First Snow of the Year

Asahidake’s First Snow of the season.

Yesterday the mountain/volcano (Asahidake) that is situated right to the East of our house got it’s first snow of the year, just one day earlier than last year. A cold front blew through and brought some moisture in from the ocean which created some cold and wet weather in the small village that we live in. I think the news said that the temperatures were around 57 degrees F (14C), but it felt much colder.

So now it starts, we should slowly over the next couple of months see the snow line travel down the mountain until it covers the entire Kamikawa basin. It is amazing to think that out of the entire year Asahidake doesn’t have snow on it for a little over 3 months.

Here is a clipping of a news story about the first snow of the coming winter season:

Residents of the Japanese ski resort of Niseko woke today to the first sight of snow for the season  an overnight dusting on the peak of Mt. Yotei.

The “hatsu yuki” (first snow) came one day after the autumnal equinox  when night and day are the same length  which signifies the start of the countdown to winter.

The event was somewhat unexpected and comes much earlier than last year, when 1898m Yotei received its first snow on October 10. Last season the first snowfall of the year was on Hokkaido’s highest peak, Mt. Asahidake on September 25, one day later than this year.

The Asahidake Ropeway reported it also got its first light snowfall last night and local newspaper The Hokkaido Shimbun reported a number of other high local peaks did also, thanks to a large cold air mass moving across the island.

So there you have it, the snow is coming, and whether you like it or not, there is nothing that you can do about it, but deal with it. The picture above is right outside my door. More to come! Take Care all.

Asahidaki has only 1 lift. The nearest airport is Asahikawa. The snow is awesome. The terrain is awesome. The onsens at the hotels at the base of the hill are awesome. I love the place.
