Beluga Whale Communicates Vocally

We have always heard stories of dolphins saving scuba divers and swimmers from shark attacks.  We hear how dolphins and sharks are some of the smartest creatures on earth and how they can communicate with each other on advanced levels.Whales and Dolphins communicate using echolocation or biosonar, in fact shrews and bats also use the same form of communication by sending out a sound similar to sonar, and then interpreting the reflection of the sound to gain information about their environment.

There is a professor at the highly acclaimed Tokai University that has taught a beluga whale to communicate vocally at Kamogawa Seaworld to recognize and repeat three different sounds that he associates with three different objects. One of the objects is a fin, whereby Nack the whale emits a short high pitched sound, the second object is swimmers goggles, whereby Nack emits a long high pitched sound, and the third object is a bucket, where Nack emits a short low pitch sound.

Professor Tsukasa Murayama started teaching Nack this form of communication after becoming dissatisfied with the usual hand signals that trainers use to communicate with whales and dolphins. This is an amazing breakthrough and could lead to more understanding of just how smart these creatures really are.  I have included a video of some Beluga whales in Japan performing.  Take Care all!You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video
