What Happens to us When We Die?

I listened to a fascinating podcast yesterday with a Dr John Lerma. Dr Lerma has served as the inpatient medical director for the internationally renowned Medical Center Hospice here in Houston, TX. He is well known for his care of terminally-ill patients, and now serves as a consultant for several hospices and palliative units here in Houston and in San Antonio Texas. He also currently teaches medical students about spirituality, death, and pain management in the terminally ill.

Dr Lerma has interviewed over 30,000 patients who were terminally ill and has recorded the same stories over and over again in a vast variety of patients. Including all different races, nationalities and religions. Like clockwork patients tell stories of being visited by light beings around the 4th week before death, sometimes it is recognized as friends or family members, and sometimes as just figures of light. Often times it is just a fleeting glimpse, while getting more frequent and longer as the patients gets closer to their transition. A few days before the patient expires the beings are there all the time.

Scientific studies of the terminally ill brains using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) technology shows the frontal lobe of the brain to be hyper activated during the end times. This section of the brain has been connected with the part of our brain that deals with psychic experiences. Could this part of the brain be activated at death in order for us to see the true nature of the Universe and who we are?

Dr Lerma lost his father recently, and was told by his father the same story as all of the other patients he interviewed. Dr Lermas father never put much thought into his sons work until close to his passing, and made the statement at the end, “John you were right”. His father described everything as emitting light, but the difference in people was the same light being emitted but in addition, a blue sphere in the middle of everyones chest. Could this be our soul?

The interview was amazing and brought tears to my eyes as I related the experience to my grandmothers death a few years back. His story will leave you feeling uplifted in faith, hope and love. And will bring new meaning into your life as to the things I discuss here so frequently concerning unconditional love, positive thoughts and acting in a kind and loving nature to all beings.

If you are interested in the podcast you can listen here.

One of the stories that Dr Lerma told that I thought was comical was of a preacher that used to go to a part of Houston that has a high homosexual population, and preach fire and brimstone telling people that they were going to hell for their immoral behavior. When this preacher was close to death, he told Dr Lerma, “I was wrong the whole time, there is no hell”.I think one of the reasons of the the decline of church populations is due to the threats of hell and being damned to a place of torment. People are tired of hearing this same (bogeyman) message. People want to hear messages of hope and love. You can definitely here the message of hope and love in Dr John Lerma’s book “Into the Light”, It is a must read for those wanting to hear the stories of others who were close to the transition stage. We are made of energy, and one of the laws of thermodynamics is Energy can be transformed into another sort of energy. But it cannot be created AND it cannot be destroyed. Energy has always existed in one form or another. So we cannot die! our energy can only be changed into another form. Get Dr Lerma’s Book, it is a must read. Take Care all!

Great article Charlie
You clearly explained, what the very first step ON THE PATH must be.
When a person finally understands that birth and death, are merely the opposite swings of the same endless cycle, then and only then, can a person completely lose their FEAR of everything. Once that first step is taken, life will begin to happen in a much more positive manner, each and every day. As the days go on, IT just keeps on getter better and better. It is the way in which we pass our days, that determines which path we are on.
Salute!

Thanks Snowman

What fascinates me is that the majority of the near death stories are all the same. It does tell you something Huh? We are infinite beings that go on forever.

See ya Soon!

This sounds like a fabulous book that could open human minds to new possibilities. P.M.H. Atwater also wrote interesting books on this subject. It does seem a common thread among NDE stories is that we often permit our imagination to buy into fear when its an illusion. Perhaps its time to redefine our understanding of immortality?

“People want to hear messages of hope and love.” Yes, and we have so many chances to do just that each day. Thank you for reminding us of what is important.

Thanks for sharing this interview.

I loved it when Dr. Lerma said ‘I am a
obstetrician for the next life’. :)))

Hi Liara

I think what Rob said is important, people want a validation that it’s not over when we die. Some of us are already convinced that we never die, while others need to hear the message of stories from the other side to ease their minds.

LOL Deb I know when I heard that part I was chuckling in my car to myself. People probably thought I was crazy if they saw me laughing by myself.

Oh Well … Thanks so much for the wonderful comments, I appreciate you all.

I have had to honor of meeting Dr. Lerma in person. His mother has been a friend of mine for many years. He is as warm and loving in person as his book infers. His book needs to be read by EVERYONE in the world. We need to love more and war less. He is writing his second book and it will be out 2009 and I for one can’t hardly wait to read it. The lessons that he has learned, and so unselfishly shared with all of humanity is beyond anything I can think of. I consider his friendship a gift from God. He is an amazing man and will change life as you know it if you read his book with an open heart. I pray that his book will give everyone the kind of clarity it has given my life. Love to all, Linda Visser
