Chakras for the Layman

The Chakras are energy centers within the body. They act somewhat like psychic organs that produce and distribute energies throughout your being. In most people the Chakras are not active hence the lack of people who are aware of their intuitive and psychic sides.
The word Chakra comes from one of the oldest languages on Earth, Sanskrit and literally means circle or wheel. The seven main chakras are described as being aligned in an ascending column from the base of the spine to the top of the head. Each chakra is associated with a certain color, multiple specific functions, an aspect of consciousness, a classical element, and other distinguishing characteristics.
The chakra system of teachings are found in many different philosophies and religions. To list just a few we find the chakra system in early Buddhist teachings, especially in the Tibet sect. Taoists speak of chakras in relation to Chi or energy. Natha, Shakta, Sufi’s all have their interpretations of the Chakras.
The chakras, or energy centers, function as pumps or valves, regulating the flow of energy through our energy system. The functioning of the chakras reflects decisions we make concerning how we choose to respond to conditions in our life. We open and close these valves when we decide what to think, and what to feel, and through which perceptual filter we choose to experience the world around us.
There are 7 major chakras connected to and a part of the physical body. All are located on the torso and head. Each chakra transmits and receives life-force energy often called “chi”, “qi”, “prana”, or “universal intelligence”. There are also many minor chakras, most of which are located at the joints of the physical body.
When we are in a state in ill health, the chakras may be distorted, out of alignment or even stagnant. When this happens, life force energy cannot flow in and out freely and the physical body may suffer. Stress, inability to express emotions, beliefs incongruent with Truth, disconnection from a higher power, unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, exposure to toxicity, etc. can cause the chakra
system to close down.
It is important for your physical and spiritual health to have an alignment and an opening of your chakras. There are many different techniques to work with your chakras. A wealth of information can be found on working with your chakras, but one of the main ways is through meditation.
I am not going to go into detail about opening and aligning your chakras in this article due to the numerous ways of doing it, instead I will just provide some links for you to investigate this on your own.
Believe what you want, but I find it hard not to give some credence to the chakra system just for the simple fact of it being in such a diverse range of teachings and philosophies. It is to easy to dismiss things that we don’t understand, so being my normal self and going against the grain, I will continue to focus study on fringe topics and seeking things to expand my consciousness.
