Drug Abuse

This is a topic that creates a sadness in my soul. I akin this to suicide. And I feel like I have enough experience to write on this subject having went through an experience with someone close to me. Sometimes we can get in a mindset that is so low that we feel there is no other outlet but to escape by using drugs. To try and forget about our problems for a short time. Now most of us know that this is not the answer, for when we come back down, the problems are still there.

Now I might not agree with our societies way of dealing with the problem by incarcerating people. Most of these people are not criminals, but they are sick. Locking them up does not solve the problem. They need to be treated for a sickness in a medical facility.

I also attribute the rising drug problem to the decline of the family. The family unit of yesterday has been replaced with the rat race of today. Mom has a full time job, Dad has a full time job, daycare is raising the kids, Teens are away with there friends, and it seems like the family is only together on holidays or special occasions. How many times today do Aunts, Uncles or Grandmas that only live 15-30 minutes driving time away, yet we still only see them on Holidays or special occasions?

Parents fail to be involved in their kids lives today like they should, and this leads to a feeling of uncaring which stems other problems sch as drug abuse.

We have been overwhelmed with the glorification of public figures and teen “idols” getting into trouble with drugs and checking into high priced rehab centers that seem to resemble more of a vacation destination than a self improvement drug rehab. From Al Gore III, to Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan, it seems like the funds for rehab are unlimited while the majority of addicts trying to get help have spent all their money on their addiction and cannot afford to get into treatment centers without the assistance of federal or state funding. Usually these kinds of treatment centers have long waiting lists and substandard treatment due to low funding.

It is such a sad state of affairs that people that are looked up to and considered idols and role models, from pop stars to sports icons are exhibiting this destructive behavior.

If you know of someone that needs help, be it a friend or family member. Do them a favor and help them. There is addiction treatment out there for them no matter what there financial situation may be.
