The Company We Keep

There was a famous saying in those non politically correct days of childhood: “A man is known by the company he keeps.â€
There is a popular saying among the self-reflective today:â€Everyone around you is a mirror of yourself.â€
Both these sayings ask us to look outward to know what we are.
What am I?
A composite picture of the many people I choose to surround myself with; the ones who are drawn to me, and those I think about in my thoughts. Reflection on the feelings each of them evokes in me, helps me to understand what I am drawing to me.
If like draws like, in the world of light, then the deeper I go within each of those around me, the deeper I can see myself.
To go deeper into another, one needs to expand, let go of the constraints of ego, use empathy, intuition, the inner knowing. These evolve as we progress on the path of knowing who we really are.
The deeper I see within myself, the deeper I can see within another.
If everyone around me is a mirror, then I see many reflections of myself.
A mirror reverses the image. To get a full picture of myself, I would need to see all my reflections, and place my attention on the one who is seeing….
And at that point, we have just begin the dance of self-knowing that is this beautiful human life.
