Peaceful Warrior

I was invited to see the movie “Peaceful Warrior this weekend for free and I couldn’t pass up the chance, especially since this is one of my all time favorite books. Now this is the first time I have been to a movie theater since my oldest son was born, so a little more than 7 years. (that’s what happens when you have kids) My wife was unable to go due to our oldest being sick, so I went out on the adventure solo.

I caught the 1:35pm showing and found the theater to be almost full which was very surprising to me. After settling into my big comfy seat (I vow not to go to sleep) the movie started shortly after. Now Nick Nolte with his sketchy past and run ins with the law made me a little apprehensive to how the movie would be conveyed to the audience. But I was pleasantly surprised to see that he played the character of Socrates very well.

Now movies can never be as good as the books, simply because you just can’t convey as much information in a movie as you can in a book. So I went in to the movie hoping, and wanting it to be good. All in all the movie was very enjoyable and I do recommend that you see it. Although you can wait till the DVD comes out.

The story was good but I think it put more emphasis on the sports career of the main character than the lesson of the movie, which I would have liked to see more of. But you will walk away with some very good lessons that the movie was throwing out to the audience. One of the major messages was living in the moment and not in the future or past. I have written before in this blog about how you cannot let the past affect how you live now, and also that we are not promised a tomorrow so live everyday like it’s your last.

Another message which hit me pretty hard and got me to thinking was, “It’s the journey, not the destination that’s important”. One part of th movie that was pretty funny was Dan and Socrates was leaving a bar and got accosted by three men who demanded their wallets. Dan knew that Socrates could handle them but Socrates threw his wallet to them and also volunteered Dan’s watch and the rest of their clothes until the were left walking home in their socks and underwear. When Dan asked him why he didn’t beat them up, Socrates replied the mean ones are the ones who need love the most.

Overall I liked the movie, compared to the trash that gets released every week it was a breath of fresh air to see a movie with a positive message, and maybe even inspire some to read Dan Millmans book “Way of the Peaceful Warrior: A Book That Changes Lives“.

An ironic thing that happened while I was watching the movie was a young man with about 4 very loud kids, kept talking on a cell phone during the movie. A lady in front of him kept saying Shhh, and even the wife of the gentleman said something to him, and he replied loudly “screw that lady”. So here we are learning a message of self improvement and betterment, and this poor gentleman is totally missing it, and will probably die missing it.

Take care all until next time.
