Who is Your Teacher?

You have probably heard the old saying that when the student is ready, the master will appear. It would be great to find one teacher that you could follow and learn from for the rest of your life. But in reality teachers come to us in many forms and disguises, some of the greatest teachers are our enemies. They test our patience and teach us about being compassionate. So next time that person that just drives you crazy comes along, remember that their purpose is to teach you a lesson or give you a test, will you pass? The people who get on your last nerve are merely a reflection of your face in a mirror. What a wonderful opportunity! Instead of wanting to punch them, embrace the lesson that is being taught to you.
Many times teachers appear to us in non human forms, for instance a little cat or dog can be a teacher. When they are young and havn’t been housebroken yet, do you let your anger take ahold and yell and scream and beat them, or do you recognize that for you to learn something you must be told over and over also. Eventually with enough training and discipline you break your bad habits also, just like a small pet. Pets are also very content with living in the presence of their master and will love you unconditionally. Another very important life teaching, you can learn from an animal.
The most precious teachers in my life are my 4 and 7 year old sons. They are so full of joy and wonderment and totally live in the moment. There are great lessons to be learned from children, because their minds are still fresh and untainted by the prejudiced, discriminative mind. They bring so much joy just watching them play, what they are teaching me is I should be bringing that child-like present moment quality into my life. What a amazing lesson and I am so grateful for the life instruction.
One of the most important teachers that you can have is your higher self or your intuition. If you look deeply within and listen to that inner voice you will instinctively know right from wrong. Everything that you can hope to learn is inside, and it will always point you in the right direction.
Stop looking for that ever so elusive teacher, because they are all around you. Your teachers open the door for you, but it is your responsibility to enter.
