New Careers

I wanted to discuss looking for a job a bit today. I lost my job of 7 years on Oct 13 2006, (Friday the 13th). The situation was I had been working for this telecommunications company for 6 years, and the owner decided to sell. New owner came in and decided I was making too much money for him even after I helped double the yearly profits the first year that he owned the company. So I was laid off. My experience is in the IT industry as Desktop Support, home and small business networks, broadband internet and VOIP. I thought after loosing my job that it would be fairly easy to find new employment, especially living in the 4th largest city in the US. But how wrong I was, here it is med-January and still no luck.

I have been averaging 3 resumes a week, and usually it is much more than that. I have tried Monster, Career Builder, Computer Jobs, and some local sites here in Houston also. I am very surprised that it has taken me this long, and possible could be longer to find something. Oh sure I could find 9-10 dollar per hour jobs left and right, but that would be selling myself short. To equal what I was making before I need to be looking for at least $17 per hour. I have applied for a lot of $20 per hour jobs but so far have had no luck. So if you are in the Houston area and you know of anything let me know. I would be very much appreciative of it.

One job search site I found recently is careerlinked.com, you can check them out at Free Job Postings. Career linked operates a little differently than the other job search sites. You don’t have to search through 100’s of listings looking for that perfect job, but instead you post your information and the employers look for you and contact you directly. Now I know that happens at some of the other sites also, but the others are geared more towards employees searching through hundreds of listings, and careerlinked is opposite. Employers search through 100’s of Employee listings looking for their perfect candidate. It’s easy to get started just start by opening an account. Instead of the usual copy and paste of a resume, there are a series of questions that you need to answer. A resume isn’t required at all, but it may be requested by an employer.

Once you have completed your profile. You are set. The only other thing to do is to make sure that you update your profile often. If it shows that you are looking for a job while looking, you may be contacted more often then you like for job opportunities. Update your profile, add more details, add more information.

The site is in Beta write now, but is in operation. If you are in the job market as I am, go give them a shot. You got nothing to loose and a job to gain, and if you have a job but are looking for a better one, cruise on over there and put some feelers out. Who knows you might land that better job.

Glad to see you’re still at it. Have you looked into relocating at all? If you want to send over your resume, we’d be glad to take a look at it for you…just let me know.

Best of luck to you,

Jane
